JICREG mapping tutorial

The following describes the creation of a map using the JICREG system from an initial drive time creation to the choice of papers and a radio station through to the export of the image.

For the purpose of this example we will assume the target audience is for the recruitment of an individual close to a main City within a short commuting distance.

The first task is to create a relevant catchment with the drive tool.

When you select the ‘Drive Time’ option you will be presented with the following screen

For this example we will input a 30minute drive from postcode sector YO23 2. As you can see the description is clearly named, this allows the user list to be found later.

When the drive time is complete you can then run the report using the button provided.

This then opens a new screen allowing you to select which newspapers you want to include in your report.

Once you have selected your titles you can then proceed to the next screen where various demographics can be chosen. Following this you will be presented with the ‘My Report’ screen.

You can then proceed to the mapping tool via the ‘run Map Picker’ option.

The example below shows the screen layout when you enter the mapping system.

From here you can change to the Newspapers tab and then select the ‘Filter By User List’ option to access greater detail on the relevant geography type.

From the data now shown in the additional columns you can make an accurate assessment as to which papers to select. Alternatively you can sort on the different columns to provide a better overview of the available resources.

For the use in the example in addition to newspapers we will show an extra level of detail by using a radio catchment. This can be selected via the ILR tab and again can be sorted on the various columns of data.

You will see that the ‘Filter By User List’ carries over and the radio stations shown are already filtered.

The radio station tab will look similar the example below.

Now that we have selected the most suited Newspapers and radio Station we can view the summary of our selections on one screen in the ‘Selected’ tab.

To further enhance our map we can add a point showing the drive start location using the add point option under the , points tab as shown below. The point requires only the sector level detail to input as opposed to the full postcode.

A title and other data can be added using the map options tab. For this example only a title will be added.

If you are using only a small selection or a single catchment the readership penetration or tile data could be worth using. Bear in mind that if you selected a specific demographic types this will be the data used in the penetration data.

Now we have all the data we want including on our map we can use either the map:vml or map:svg tab to create the final map.

The image below is created using the map:vml option. By hovering over the various key fills you will see the related catchment highlight on the map. Places names and road data can be amended using the drop down menus.

To export the image the ‘Save As’ drop down menu provide the various types of format that can be used. Another way is to use the ‘Link to this page’ hypertext and email the provided web address to the client.
