PowerPoint editable maps with the map:vml tab

Zoom function maps with the map:svg tab

When you are ready to view your map, you have a choice of two ways to display it: PowerPoint editable map:vml or zoom function map:svg

PowerPoint editable maps with the map: vml tab

The ‘map:vml’ tab displays your map in a format editable in PowerPoint. Click here to find out more about editing your maps in PowerPoint.

You can change the look of your map using the options in the toolbar:

Place Names

Choose to add or remove place names using the ‘Place Names’ tab

You have the choice of displaying any combination of Capital, Cities, Large Towns, Medium Towns, Small Towns, Villages, Suburbs and Hamlets. The level of detail can be selected / deselected by clicking on the individual subheadings or as a group using the category heading. What looks good depends on the geographical area your map covers. Just cities for a UK map, for example.

Roads

Choose to add or remove Motorways, Primary Roads and A Roads using the ‘Roads’ tab.

The level of detail can be selected / deselected by clicking on the individual subheadings or as a group using the category heading.

Points

Display / Hide your points name by clicking the ‘Points’ tab

Map

Choose ‘UK’ to map the selected User List and catchment(s) area(s) within the whole of the UK.

Choose ‘Snug’ to map the User List and selected catchment(s) area(s) using the User List area and the whole area of your selected geography types.

The finished map can be exported to PowerPoint 2000 or above where it can be edited. It can also be saved as the following image files: emf, gif, jpg, wmf and png.

Below is an example of a map created in the VML format.

Zoom function map:svg tab

The ‘map:svg’ tab displays the map in a format you can zoom in and out of. For this, you may need to download an Adobe plug-in to enable you to view your map. If so, JICREG mapping will let you know, and will direct you to the site where you can download the plug-in, if available.

In addition to the standard toolbar, the map:svg option has additional functionality in a collapsible navigation toolbar enabling you to manipulate your map further:

Click this arrow to minimise or maximise the toolbar

This tool removes any functionality you have previously selected with your mouse. For example, if you choose to pan the map, selecting this tool next will remove the pan function, so that you do not accidentally drag the map further

This tool allows you to zoom into the mapand can be used with a ouse click on the map, or by dragging out a square with the mouse

This tool allows you to zoom out of the map

Clicking on the map with this tool re-centres the map wherever you have clicked

Pan the map using this tool with the left mouse button held. This is useful when zoomed into a map, as you can then pan the map to see other areas outside the confines of the zoomed area

Get a feel for where you are zoomed into a map using the rocket tool. If you have zoomed in to a map, but would like to see where the zoomed in area is in relation to your full map, clicking on this tool will quickly zoom the map out and then back into the zoomed in area

Clicking on the reset button takes the map back to the one originally created

Use the information tool to bring up a road name when you hover over a road or bring up a catchment name when you hover over a catchment. To turn this tool off, just click on it again (it has a toggle on / off feature)

Zooming in and out of a map can alter the scale. Using this button will scale roads and place names appropriately

IMPORTANT NOTE

The svg map exported is not editable within PowerPoint. Only the vml map will support this functionality.

Below is an example of a map created in the SVG format which has been zoomed into.
